PMD: plastic packaging, metal packaging (cans) and beverage cartons

On this page, you will find everything you need to know about disposing of PMD waste. Proper waste separation helps reduce environmental impact and supports recycling efforts in our municipality. We explain what belongs in PMD and how to dispose of it correctly.

PMD: What can go in?

PMD includes: plastic packaging, metal packaging (such as cans) and beverage cartons. On this page, you can see what is allowed in the special PMD waste bag and how to dispose of your PMD waste.

Not sure whether an item belongs in PMD?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is it packaging?
  • Is it made of plastic or metal (tin), or is it a beverage carton?
  • Is it empty?

Three times “yes”? Then it can go in the PMD. A “no” to any of these? Then it is not PMD.

Below you will find an overview of what can and cannot be disposed of as PMD. At the bottom of the page, you will find a clear and easy-to-read image.

How do you dispose of PMD waste?

Please dispose of your PMD waste in designated PMD bags.

You can pick these up free of charge at:

  • most supermarkets;
  • town hall;
  • ‘milieustraat’ (recycling centre)

We collect PMD waste from your home once every two weeks, free of charge.

Please tie the bag(s) securely before putting them out on the street. Place your PMD bags at the collection point before 7:30 a.m. on collection day. You can recognise this location by the white container on the pavement.

Do you live in a flat or apartment?

Then please dispose of your bagged PMD waste at the main entrance, in the orange PMD square, or next to the underground container. Please note! Do NOT place the bag on the platform surrounding the underground container, but on the pavement next to it.

Tips for separating PMD waste

How can you best separate PMD from other waste? And how can you make it as easy as possible for yourself? Here are a few tips:

  • Empty plastic packaging by shaking or scraping it out before putting it in the PMD waste bag. The packaging does not have to be clean.
  • Flatten plastic packaging and beverage cartons to save space.
  • Place a small bin for plastic packaging in your bathroom. You probably use a lot of plastic there.
  • Try not to put packaging inside other packaging. This makes sorting more difficult later.

PMD: What happens to it?

Plastic packaging

Plastic is shredded into small pieces and then sorted by colour and type. It is then processed into granules, which are used as raw material for new plastic products. These include bottles and containers, but also items such as roadside marker posts, fleece clothing, carpeting, and even tennis and golf balls.

Metal packaging (cans)

Empty cans are turned into bicycles, cars and many other metal products. Metal is melted down and can be reused endlessly.

Beverage cartons

Beverage cartons are recycled into products such as toilet paper, tissues, office supplies and cardboard boxes. First, the different layers of the carton are separated, such as plastic, cardboard and aluminium.
